Ribs Bench

Stefan Lie is one of Australia's leading contemporary designers whose work is included in private and public collections such as the Power House Museum in Sydney. Stefan's work displays an ability to provide a fresh, intuitive take on common domestic objects with a strong emphasis on simple shapes and elegant, pared-back forms. He draws on more than 15 years experience in designing products ranging from furniture and homewares to footwear and jewellery. Alongside his design practice, Lie has an ongoing role as a lecturer and research academic at the University of Technology Sydney.

"As its name suggests, Ribs is composed of a series of arching forms over a movable aluminium spine. In 1998 I wanted to learn about moulding plywood so I made the first version of Ribs in timber. But the form lends itself to many possible materials. Over the years it has been used in so many different environments and I have liked it in every single one.

I have fond memories of designing Ribs. Getting the geometry right so that it forms a straight edge if both ends are moved to the same side, while at the same time making sure it retains its organic appearance was challenging but fun."
